Religious Distortion: The Aghori People

Many religions and practices evolve over time.  The people of a certain belief are prone to change and bring about this slow transformation.  There is a particular sect of the Hindu religion that has altered their beliefs in a very strange way.  These people are known as the Aghoris.

Check out this short 4 minute video on the Aghori People.

The Aghori people devote themselves to Shiva.  They believe in the liberation of the cycle of reincarnation as all Hindu People do.  Through this monist view they conclude that all opposites (especially good and evil) are illusionary.  They are ascetics who do many things that we would see as strict taboo.  They live on the ashes of the dead, they practice Tantra, they occasionally have a cannibalistic diet and they meditate upon dead corpses.  Their idea behind the performing of these dreadful things is to gain the realization that the duality of social taboos and good is all an illusion.

I thought that is was very interesting to see how a certain mindset could change so drastically.  It scares me to think that maybe one of the cults that is around today may have a say in actual religion in the world in 1000 years or so.  It also goes to show that because there are so many sects and runoffs of the religion, who is to say which one is right.  It could be possible that the “true” religion for us is to practice the Aghori way.

There is so much distortion in the belief system of all religions, who is to say which one in the most divine?

  1. It is a fascinating religion, casting off the human perceptions of 'clean and unclean' perhaps is a good way to become closer to the divine, because a divine being has no such thoughts? Though, the Agori leader did way that to consume evil is to be not afraid of it or something to that effect. That statement seems a bit off since according he the documentary, they do not believe that the things they consume are evil. Is this a mistake on the documenters part? Or are these people still cought by the human notions of evil?
