Losing Our Connection

Right in Two By Tool

Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.
Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys,
where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two
Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
(and this is what they choose)
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade,
And where there's one they're
bound to divide it,
Right in two.
Right in two.
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs, they make a club
And beat their brother down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
to lift an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.
cut it, divide it all right in two (x4)
They fight, till they die
Over earth, over sky
They fight
Over lies, over blood, over air
And light, over love, over son
Over blood
They fight, till they die, over what? for our lies!
Angels on the sideline again
Benched along with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end
cut it, divide it all right in two (x3)
Right in two
Right in two...

This is a song about the madness of war today.  There are plenty of religious references within the lyrics.  Maynard James Keenan (the lead singer for tool) seems to detest the work of God.  The angels are on the sidelines and not able to help the humans (monkeys) with their lives.  He asks why he gave them free will, for we are all confused and fighting each other.  He expresses the earth as Eden and holy grounds, suggesting that there is a higher power or more to life than what we see.  He say that we are misguided for there is no higher power helping us for all of our beliefs are so skewed that no one knows which one is right.  It is our fault for we have blinded our religious eye and lost all connection.  We are fighting over religious lies that are dividing us right in two.

In my opinion this is a song about how religion is dying.  All of the main religions now must be wrong, for God gave us free will and reason and yet we still fight over beliefs.  We need to rediscover religion for what it is supposed to do; enlighten us and strengthen us beyond our earthly self.  Right now our connection is being lost and we do not know which way to turn, which is causing us to be confused and vent our confusion on other people but slaughtering them.  There is a higher power, we just have forgotten how to reach it.

  1. Religion is indeed confusing. It is true that there appears to be alot more 'what do i really believe' going on, but I think that this sort of thinking has the potential to actually lead to more religious people. For, when people are confused and can't find answers they turn to something to latch onto. This is often a religion of some sort. Perhaps a new religion needs to be born?
